Listening – A gift we rarely value

Sairam friends,

I was watching a video about how Auditory School of NY where they train kids who are born deaf to hear *to some extent. I wanted to write about it today because we people who are blessed with ability to listen does not realize the value of “Listening”.

A 10 year boy in the video tells “Listening leads to literacy.”

Imagine how much we would have learned by this time if we have really valued listening?

We ignored most of the knowledge which could have been gained just because we thought its not meant for us. We simply used our listening capability to entertain and also spoil ourselves.

Sai himself expects devotees to learn to live better by listening. Once, a devotee asks a doubt to Saibaba. He don’t know what’s right. Sai would have directly answered him but Sai asked him to go to wada (resting house) and listen to the old lady reading puran.

The devotee goes there, listens to the lady reading puran and from that got his doubt clarified.

Many Sai devotees thinks about reading Sai Satcharitra. Its really auspicious. If you can’t read, simply listen to Sai Satcharitra with devotion. Just one chapter a day will bring you closer to Sai.

Go to below link and look for Sai Satcharitra Audio and download from that website.

Life of Shirdi Sai baba – Sri Sai Satcharitra

Another habit many people have is listening to Music with ear phones. Its good to relax with music but when one gets addicted to it, it spoils their ability to listen. So if you see your friends listening to music with high volume, request them to do good to their future. See this – Affect of Music on Hearing Loss

The reason I write these articles is because of my interest to inspire and motivate students and professionals to learn continuously for lifetime. I hope Saibaba blessed me to work on the project.

  • I read a quote recently that is apt here. “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” by Stephen R. Covey

Hearing and listening are two different acts. The former is involuntary and the latter is voluntary. We learn much by listening but we are all guilty of not doing so often. Jai Sairam!
